InGym: Program for integration at Gymnasium

InGym provides especially high-performing students with the possibility of learning German in one term (reaching B1+), simplifying integration into the Bavarian educational system.

Since 2023 three schools in Munich have been offering InGym-courses (see the different sites in the Bayern Atlas):

For the school year 2026/2027, the registration and testing procedure will be organized by Wilhelm-Hausenstein-Gymnasium. The next placement tests will take place on Thursday, 10 September 2026, at the Wilhelm Hausenstein Gymnasium. Starting Tuesday, April 14, 2026, you can register here (https://anmeldung.schule-infoportal.de/whgmuc) and sign your child up for the tests. Please read the information and requirements for participation in the program carefully before registering.

What are the goals and contents of the program?

  • reaching level B1 of German as a foreign language
  • introduction to society and culture of Germany
  • getting familiar with the Bavarian school system and preparation for future integration into regular classes
  • group size: 18 students max.
  • schedule:
    • 20 hours / week: German as a foreign language
    • 4 hours / week: Maths, English
    • 1-2 hours / week: Geography, History, Social Studies, Physics, PE, etc.
    • 1 hour / week: Arts, Music
    • excursions: Munich and surroundings
    • intermittent attendance of lessons in regular classes

Who is the target group?

  • students whose native language is not German, who are not yet able to follow regular classes at high school, and who:
  • are usually between 11 and 15 years old:
    • Junior course: grades 6 and 7 (age: 11-13 years)
    • Senior course: grades 8 and 9 (age: 13-15 years)
  • will attend grades 6 to 9 after the InGym course
  • have only recently arrived in Germany (max. 12 months)
  • intend to stay in Germany in the long run (residence permit)
  • have attended a secondary school abroad
  • show high motivation and willingness to learn
  • have passed the placement tests in Maths and English (see below)
  • are willing/able to commute to one of the three InGym schools for one semester (Phase I)

What is the course of the project?

  • passing of the placement test (February/September, s. below)
  • Phase I: one school semester at one of the three InGym schools
  • Phase II: one school semester as a guest student at the main school (“Stammschule”) close to home with special support

Please note that at the beginning of the InGym course students will need a Gymnasium close to their place of residence (“Stammgymnasium”) to return to after successfully completing the InGym program.

What are the Placement Tests about and when do they take place?

  • English (45 min)
  • Maths (45 min)
  • The next placement tests will take place on Thursday, September 10, 2026, probably from 8:15 a.m. to 12:30 at Wilhelm-Hausenstein-Gymnasium.

No knowledge of German is required for the test. The requirements are based on the Bavarian curriculum for the corresponding grades.

Please note that the exams cannot be retaken!

Application is possible from Tuesday, April 14, to July 31, 2026!

Documents required are:

  • child’s birth certificate
  • copy of the child’s ID card / passport
  • last report card
  • proof of measles immunity status
